Larry's 50 years of flying baja...I started flying
over 50 years ago in my first $600 airplane. Words can not express the amount
of pleasure I have received, not just from flying and the freedom it has
afforded me, but from the people it has allowed me to meet.
Forty-two years ago I flew into a little Mexican town on the Sea of Cortez. I
landed on a dirt strip and taxied the plane up to a beautiful hotel. The
hotel was the Serenidad and the town was Mulege. We stayed at the hotel, swam
in the pool, fished for a couple of days and enjoyed the world famous pig
roast on Saturday night, it does not get any better. Over the last forty-two
years I have been blessed to be able to return there several time a year. We
have had three generations of Hahns visit this beautiful place. My father and
I went for years and my son and I were there just last week. I am looking
forward to taking the fourth generation. It will not be long now.
Nothing much has changed at the Serenidad over the last forty-two years, THANK
YOU GOD. Everything is still as beautiful and quaint as always. What really
makes it special and keeps it special has been and still is the owner, Don
Johnson. His genuine desire to please has never changed. If a pilot or
fisherman has been going to the Baja for any length of time Don Johnson has
probably helped him in some way. He is a great man and I have been blessed to
have him as a friend.
Last weekend we celebrated our 40th annual Fly-in Pig Roast. I manned Pig
Roast Tower and landed 15 planes. As usual Don, his daughter Deana and the
staff out -did themselves. I will be back manning the tower on August 7, 2004
for the 41st. PLEASE JOIN US.
